Villanova Falters Against Loyola Chicago

CLEARWATER, Fla. - The Wildcats suffered a 7-1 loss to Loyola of Chicago in their second game at the USF Under Armour Showcase in Clearwater, Fla.. Villanova couldn't capitalize on its six hits and came up short in the afternoon contest. Beth Smetana led the team with two hits, including a homerun.
Both teams went scoreless through the first two innings, but Loyola of Chicago struck first and three times in the top of the third inning, scoring three runs. Three singles by the Ramblers brought runners home and gave them the early 3-0 lead over Villanova.
The Wildcats found an opening in the bottom of the fourth inning as Beth Smetana (San Diego, Calif.) rocketed a homerun to left field. Valerie Ortega (Ventura, Calif.) got a piece of the ball and singled on a bunt, while Briana Fujii (San Jose, Calif.) singled to through the right side. The inning would end with the two batters stranded on base and the score would stand at 3-1.
Loyola came right back in the top of the fifth inning and score two more runs, extending their lead 5-1. Villanova couldn't make a comeback as the team lacked in hits for the rest of the game. Freshman Stephanie Butler (Barnegat, N.J.) notched her first collegiate hit in the bottom of the seventh inning, but it wouldn't be enough to pull the Wildcats back in the game.
Kaity Sitzman (Tucson, Ariz.) pitched most of the game for Villanova and struck out one batter and Ali Angelbello (Ft. Lauderdale, Ariz.) finished out the game, striking out three batters in her two innings pitched.
The Wildcats will resume play tomorrow morning when they take on UT Chattanooga at 11:45 AM.
