March 8, 2013
CLEARWATER, Fla. - The Wildcats (6-5) got off to a fast start with a 5-3 win over Toledo in their first game of the USF Under Armour Showcase in Clearwater, Fla.. Villanova scored three of their five runs in the first inning, giving them the early lead and eventually the victory over the Rockets.
Villanova got their offense wheels turning quickly in the bottom of the first inning. Shea Palmer (Scottsdale, Ariz.) doubled down the right field line in the first at bat for the Wildcats. Valerie Ortega (Ventura, Calif.) earned an RBI with a sacrificial fly to center field, brining Palmer across the plate. Briana Fujii's (San Jose, Calif.) single to right field earned her two runs, extending Villanova's lead to 3-0.
The Wildcats would hold onto their lead for the remainder of the game as Kate Poppe (Downingtown, Pa.) held back Toledo. In the fourth inning, the Rockets were able to get two hits off a Poppe and score one run, but that was the closest they would get to catching up to the `Cats.
In the bottom of the same inning, Briana Fujii notched her second hit of the game with a double to left field. Julie Smith (Dana Point, Calif.) got a piece of the ball and singled through the left side and Aleshia Ayers (Sacramento, Calif.) singled, earning an RBI by bringing home Danielle Lewandowski (Chicago, Ill.). The Wildcats continued their offensive successes in the bottom of the fifth inning when Valerie Ortega doubled and advanced to third base on an error. Sierra McConnell's (Katy, Texas) single brought Ortega home. The score would be Villanova's final of the game and the Wildcats would snag the 5-3 victory over Toledo.
Poppe ended the game with four strikeouts and Ali Angelbello (Ft. Lauderdale, Fla.) struck out one batter in the morning contest. The Wildcats out-hit Toledo 8-7.
Villanova will continue play in USF this afternoon when they take on Loyola University.
