Softball Rolls to 3-0 in 2001 with 6-1 Victory Over Bethune Cookman
March 7, 2001 Villanova, PA - Jackie Pasquerella's (Bayshore, NY/Bayshore) two-run single in the second was all Villanova senior pitcher Keri Stoller (West Linn, OR/West Linn) would need as she threw six innings of three-hit and one run softball to secure the Wildcats their third victory in as many tries. Junior catcher Josey Mikulyuk (Mishawaka, IN/Mishawaka) hit a two-run home run in the seventh inning to end the scoring for Villanova and solidify the 6-1 victory. With the victory, Villanova improves to 3-0 overall, while Bethune Cookman falls to 8-8. The Wildcats jumped on Bethune Cookman early tallying three second inning runs. Freshman Lisa Krueger (Mission Viejo, CA/Aliso Niguel) got the scoring started by singling in Mikulyuk. Pasquerella followed by singling in Krueger and Kriste Romano (Mesa, AZ/Red Mountain) to give the 'Cats 3-0 lead. Villanova did not score until the seventh inning when Mikulyuk hit a line drive two-run home run to extend Villanova's lead. Scoring on Mikulyuk's homer was Ricci Lugo (San Clemente, CA/San Clemente) who smashed her first collegiate double prior to the home run. The Wildcats would tally once more when Gina DeFrancesco (Ardmore, PA/Haverford) scored on an error on a ball hit by Kailyn Bergstrom (Kutztown, PA/Kutztown). Bethune Cookman could push across only one run the entire game, allowing Villanova to walk away victorious.
Theresa Hornick (Edmonds, Wash./Seattle Prep) would take over in relief for Stoller in the seventh and was perfect. She shut down Bethune Cookman in order and sent them home with the loss. Offensively for Villanova, Mikulyuk led the way going 2-4 with two RBI and two runs scored.
