MADEIRA BEACH, Fla.- The Villanova softball team (3-5 overall, 0-0 BIG EAST) wrapped up its second day at the Madeira Beach Invitational as they fell to SIUE 2-0 in a hard-fought pitcher’s duel between freshman Anissa Amarillas and SIUE’s Emily Ingles. The Wildcats will wrap up play at the Madeira Beach Invitational tomorrow as they face Central Arkansas at 9:00 a.m. and Loyola at 2:00 p.m.
The first inning began as a quick one for Villanova as they were only able to generate one hit in the inning courtesy of Amarillas. SIUE would start the bottom of the first with a hit batsman and a sacrifice bunt and after a sacrifice fly later in the inning SIUE to the early 1-0 lead.
In the second SIUE’s pitching stayed tough as the Wildcats failed to put a runner on base in the inning. But Anissa Amarillas continued her streak of dominate pitching and was able to give up no hits in the inning keeping the score 1-0 SIUE.
After Villanova went down one, two, three in the third SIUE threatened by loading the bases after a pair of singles and a walk. But Amarillas held her ground and was able to make the SIUE batter fly out to left field to end the inning giving up no runs.
In the fourth, the strong pitching continued for SIUE as the Wildcats were unable to put a runner on in the inning. Amarillas continued her dominate pitching in the inning as well as she did not let up any runs after only giving up two hits in the inning.
In the fifth inning Villanova was able to put a runner on as freshman Julia DaCosta nailed a single to left field. But the inning would close with DaCosta remaining on first base as they were unable to capitalize on the DaCosta single. Anissa Amarillas went straight back to work in the bottom of the inning as she was able to down the Cougars after only giving up a walk in the inning.
The sixth inning was another dominate inning by SIUE’s Ingles as she put away the Villanova batters after only letting up a hit batter to take the first base bag.
Villanova would try to make a push in the seventh after Dana Morris knocked a double into left field. But the team was unable to score her in from second as the game would end with a final score of 2-0.
Both pitchers had amazing games as Amarillas went six innings allowing just five hits and two runs. While SIUE’s Ingles went seven innings, allowing just three hits and no runs. Amarillas record drops to 3-2 while Ingles improves to 4-1 on the year.
Villanova returns to action tomorrow as they wrap up play at the Madeira Beach Invitational as they face Central Arkansas at 9:00 a.m. and Loyola at 2:00 p.m.
