ORLANDO, Fla. - Villanova (5-5) faced the Ole Miss Rebels for the second time Sunday morning in their final game of the UCF Spring Fling Tournament in Orlando, Fla. The `Cats suffered a 2-0 loss, but showed much defensive improvement from their first miss against the Rebels. Kate Poppe served as Villanova's pitcher and registered four strikeouts in the morning contest.
The Wildcats held off Ole Miss through two the first two innings, but the Rebels managed a score in the bottom of the third. A single and a walk followed by a throwing error brought in a run, putting the Rebels up 1-0.
Taylor Olafson (Jacksonville, Fla.) got Villanova's offensive wheels moving in the top of the sixth inning and advanced to second base due to a sacrificial bunt from teammate Amanda Marquez (Miami, Fla.). Ole Miss struck again in the bottom of the sixth inning with a triple off pitcher Kate Poppe (Downingtown, Pa.) to bring home a player and extend the Rebel's lead to 2-0.
With one inning left to make a comeback, Ali Lowe (West Palm Beach, Fla.) got a piece of the ball on the single to the left side, but the hit wouldn't be enough to pull Villanova back from the deficit and they would end the game with their second loss to Ole Miss.
Ali Lowe and Amanda Marquez were named to UCF Spring Fling's All-Tournament team. Lowe led the team with a .500 batting average (six-for-12) and a .500 slg%. She earned an RBI on the weekend, while going one-for-one in stolen base attempts. Marquez notched a .400 batting average (six-for-15) and registered 26 putouts behind the plate.
The Wildcats will continue play in Florida next weekend when they participate in the USF Underarmour Invitational in Clearwater, Fla.
