MADERIA BEACH, Fla.- The Villanova softball team (3-4 overall, 0-0 BIG EAST) spilt the first day of the Madeira Beach second weekend with a loss against Incarnate Word 5-3 and a win against Alabama State 5-3. The Wildcats return to action tomorrow when they face SIUE at 11:00 a.m.
Villanova vs. Incarnate Word
Villanova struck first after a fly out by Brittany Husk, junior Lauren Hanna nailed a home run to left field to put the Wildcats ahead 1-0. A batter later, freshman Anissa Amarillas would hit a homer to right field to go back to back with Hanna to put Villanova at the end of a half inning 2-0. Caitlyn Dickman started the game for the Wildcats and had a strong couple of innings as she only gave up a run in the second inning to keep the Villanova ahead 2-1.
In the third, Brittany Husk was able to knock a single passed the shortstop to put a runner on with no outs. After a batter flied out, Anissa Amarillas would once again come in clutch as she banged a double to center which moved Husk to third base. But the Wildcats were unable to score that inning leaving the score after two and a half innings 2-1. Taylor Rhinehart would come into pitch for Villanova after Dickman gave up one run on three hits. Incarnate Word would take the lead after a pair of singles and walks the Cardinals took the lead 3-2.
The fourth would be a quick one for both teams as each team went down one, two, three. In the fifth, after Villanova failed to score in the inning, Incarnate Word would come close to scoring after a single and a sacrifice bunt put a runner in scoring position but thanks to strong pitching by Rhinehart, the Cardinals failed to score.
In the sixth inning Incarnate Word was able to score two more runs in after a pair of singles, a walk and a hit batsman. Heading into the seventh the Cardinals lead 5-2. The Wildcats would be able to add one more run to the game courtesy of a home run by Dana Morris to make the final score 5-3.
Villanova vs. Alabama State
Villanova struck first in the game after Lauren Hanna singled and advanced to second on a passed ball, Nikki Alden was able to single and move Hanna to third. The next batter was Dana Morris and she belted a single which was able to score Hanna to put Villanova ahead 1-0. But the scoring wouldn’t end there as Caroline Jones knocked in a single to score in Dana Morris and Nikki Alden to put Villanova ahead 3-0.
Anissa Amarillas (2-1) took the mound for her fourth appearance as a starter. She was dominate the entire game as she pitched six scoreless innings while only meaning to give up six hits the entire game.
In the fifth, after Megan Ruiz reached on an error, Lauren Hanna would knock in her second double of the season which moved Ruiz to third. After Olivia Francomano pitch ran for Hanna and advanced to third on a passed ball which also scored Ruiz to put Villanova ahead 4-0. Then Anissa Amarillas walked and brought up Nikki Alden who flied out to right field which scored in Francomano and earned Alden her third RBI of the year as well as made the score 5-0 heading into the sixth.
Alabama State would cut into the Villanova lead as the Hornets Hatty shop hit a three-run home run to cut the Villanova lead to just two. But Kalee Smith who replaced Amarillas would stay strong and helped Amarillas earn her third win of the season and improved the Villanova softball record to 3-4 on the year.
Villanova will continue play tomorrow in Madeira Beach as the Wildcats face SIUE at 11 a.m.
