Wildcats Drop to UCF

ORLANDO, Fla. - Villanova (4-3) fell to the host team UCF at the UCF Spring Fling tournament Friday afternoon 3-0. Senior Julie Smith notched her second double of the season in the afternoon loss.
The Wildcats opened the game with tough defense through the first inning, but UCF found an opening in the bottom of the second inning to take the 1-0 lead. Villanova wasn't letting down easily as UCF would go scoreless in the next pair of innings.
Julie Smith (Dana Point, Calif.) doubled down the left field line in the top of the fifth, but the Wildcats couldn't manage a score off the play. Smith's hit was her second double of the season. In the bottom of the fifth, the Knights got on the scoreboard again after a single followed by a sacrificial bunt from UCF extend their lead to 2-0.
Another UCF double in the bottom of the sixth inning would put the Knights in scoring position, giving them the 3-0 lead. With one last chance to make a comeback, Villanova was unable to get on base and would come up short in the second game of the tournament.
The Knights outhit the Wildcats 6-2 and Villanova committed the game's only two errors.
Pitcher Kaity Sitzman (Tucson, Ariz.) struck out one batter in her six innings pitched.
The Wildcats will continue play at the UCF Spring Fling Saturday morning when they take on Ole Miss at 9:30 AM.
