ORLANDO, Fla. - The Wildcats (4-2) fell to Connecticut in the first game of the UCF Spring Fling tournament 2-1 Friday afternoon. Both teams battled back and forth, but UConn's two runs in the fifth inning would give them the edge over Villanova to take the win. Senior Valerie Ortegahad two of the Wildcats' seven hits in the contest.
The game went scoreless through the first four innings as freshman pitcher Kate Poppe(Downingtown, Pa.) held back the Huskies and only gave up two hits. However, Connecticut struck first in the top of the fifth inning when a double from Marissa Guches brought in two runs. The Huskies would take control of the lead 2-0.
Villanova halted UConn from scoring for the remainder of the game, but struggled to get their wheels going offensively. Four of their seven hits on the game came in the final two innings of play. Valerie Ortega(Ventura, Calif.) got a piece of the ball twice and notched two singles in both the sixth and seventh innings.
The Wildcats saw an offensive surge in the bottom of the seventh with the determination to extend the game to extra innings. Ali Lowe (West Palm Beach, Fla.), Taylor Olafson (Jacksonville, Fla.), Amanda Marquez (Miami, Fla.) and Valerie Ortegamanaged to get a hit off and on base. Lowe stole second base and advanced to third on a throwing error by the catcher, and eventually scored Villanova's sole run of the game, but the Wildcats last chance score wouldn't be enough as they would suffer their second loss of the season to Connecticut 2-1.
Poppe would finish the game with seven strikeouts in her first credited loss of the season. She gave up four hits and two runs.
Villanova will get another shot at tallying a win this afternoon when they face the host team, UCF, at 4 PM. Fans can keep track of the game live via UCF's Tournament Central page.
