GREENVILLE, N.C.---As Villanova continued play at the Holiday Inn Express Classic hosted by East Carolina University, it dropped two on Saturday, Feb. 19, falling to the College of Charleston, 10-0, and Radford, 1-0, in a nine inning battle. The Wildcats are now 2-2 on the season.
Shannon Williams (1-1) took the loss against the Cougars (4-1), pitching three innings and giving up six runs, four of which were earned.
Kristen Haynes (1-1) pitched all nine innings of a 1-0 battle against Radford. Haynes came up with nine strikeouts and gave up just six hits, all singles. Lisa Krueger was 2-for-3 with a walk while Lindsey Martin was 2-for-2 at bat. The Wildcats excelled defensively in their second game, giving up just one run and sending the game to two extra innings.
The Highlanders scored in the bottom of the ninth inning after Danielle Tompkins was placed on second base. Next, Morgan Nichols was hit by a pitch and advanced to first. Cassie Rhodes hit a single to center and Krueger threw the lead runner, Tompkins, out at home plate. Michelle Carlson would end the game on a single down left field that brought Colleen Casey in for the winning run. Casey pinch ran for Nichols.
The Wildcats resume play in the tournament on Sunday morning against opponents yet to be determined.
