Laura Sylvester Earns First Team Academic Honors from CoSIDA/ESPN The Magazine
Nov. 18, 2008
VILLANOVA, Pa. - Senior defender Laura Sylvester (Broomall, Pa.) was named to the CoSIDA/ESPN The Magazine Academic All-District first team and becomes the first Villanova player since 2004 to receive first team All-District honors.
Sylvester just completed her senior season as a starting defender for the Wildcats and has received honors for her academic performances each of her four years. She is enrolled in a demanding Finance program in the renowned Villanova School of Business and has excelled in the classroom while simultaneously being one of the most pivotal players on the field for Villanova.
This season Sylvester was named to the BIG EAST weekly honor roll on September 1 after her strong defensive play helped the Wildcats capture the TD Banknorth Classic title at Vermont. Villanova posted consecutive wins over New Hampshire (2-1) and the host Catamounts (3-0) and Sylvester earned a spot on the All-Tournament team for her play.
The Wildcats finished the season with an 11-7-1 record to ensure the program's 10th straight season with a winning record and at least 10 victories, while also posting the team's 12th consecutive non-losing season. Always a strong defensive squad, Villanova recorded seven shutouts during the season and limited opponents to just over six shots on goal per game.
During her career Sylvester has earned academic honors in some form all four years. She is a three-time BIG EAST Academic All-Star and now becomes a two-time CoSIDA/ESPN The Magazine All-District selection as well after earning second team accolades last season. Sylvester was also named to the 2006 Philadelphia Inquirer Academic All-Area Team and is once again a nominee for the 2008 squad. The All-Area selections will be announced at a later date.
