Damstrom, Kranich and Houck Earn Final BIG EAST Weekly Honors
Oct. 22, 2012
PROVIDENCE, R.I. - Following a 1-0 upset win over No. 12/14 Georgetown on Oct. 19, a pair of Villanova standouts earned the final BIG EAST women's soccer weekly awards. Wildcats junior Jami Kranich (Hamden, Conn.) earned BIG EAST Goalkeeper of the Week honors while freshman teammate Emily Damstrom (Short Hill, N.J.) was named the BIG EAST Rookie of the Week. Junior defender Taylor Houck (Chalfont, Pa.) was also named to the weekly honor roll for her performance against the Hoyas.
Louisville junior Charlyn Corral earned BIG EAST Offensive Player of the Week honors, while Marquette senior Ally Miller was named BIG EAST Defensive Player of the Week.
Kranich earned BIG EAST Goalkeeper of the Week honors after totaling five saves in a 1-0-0 week. The junior had four of her five stops in the second half as Villanova upset No. 12/14 Georgetown on Oct. 19. Kranich anchored the VU defense that kept the nation's 11th-ranked offense scoreless and it was the team's first win over Georgetown since Sept. 1, 2007. For the year, has played over 575 minutes in goal and made 30 saves with a .882 save percentage.
Damstrom was cited as the BIG EAST Rookie of the Week after she scored the gamewinner in the 1-0 victory. It was just her second goal of the year and only the second goal Georgetown has allowed in league play. The victory also helped Villanova secure a home game in the first round of the BIG EAST Championship. For the season, Damstrom has played in all 18 games while making 17 starts with two goals and one assist in 2012.
Houck was a defensive force against the Hoyas, stopping nearly every advance towards goal in the upset victory. Houck has been one of the top defensive players for Villanova all season and was responsible for a team save in the 59th minute when she blocked the net to prevent a shot from GU's Jessica Clinton. Additionally, the junior has been Villanova's go-to on set pieces this season and registered one shot during the match. She's played every minute of 43 consecutive games for the Wildcats dating back to 2010.
The Wildcats begin their quest to the BIG EAST Championship this week when they host DePaul on Thursday, October 25th at West Campus Soccer Complex for a first round postseason matchup. Game time is slated for 2 p.m.
