Villanova women’s soccer will play their second road game of the season Friday night when they travel to Lehigh for a 7 p.m. kick off. Following their trip to Bethlehem, Pa. the Wildcats will return home Sunday afternoon to host the La Salle Explorers.
The Wildcats are coming off back-to-back wins last weekend against Saint Joseph’s and Lafayette. That marked the first time Villanova won two consecutive games since 2012, and the 5-0 victory over Lafayette was the most goals scored in a single game since 2008.
Villanova was honored with three weekly awards, Amanda Vocelka was awarded BIG EAST Offensive Player of the Week, Emily Kuefler was named Defensive Player of the Week, and Emily Harris was named to the Weekly Honor Roll.
“I think they are all individual awards but we take them as team awards, none of us would win the individual honors if it wasn’t for the way our team played,” shared Vocelka.
The Wildcats have a lot of momentum after last weekend’s victories she continued, “Winning back to back games last weekend gave us a lot of momentum that we are going to carry forward for the end of our non-conference season and also going into the BIG EAST. This was something we set as a goal for ourselves at the beginning of the season and is something that hasn’t happened for Villanova soccer in a long time so getting that accomplishment was really big for us.”
Villanova enters the weekend with a 3-2 overall record and will travel to Lehigh for a Friday evening matchup, the Mountain Hawks are 2-2-1. Last weekend, Lehigh suffered back-to-back losses against Towson and Delaware and will play fellow BIG EAST team, St. John’s after playing Villanova.
La Salle is 4-1-1 and shut out Fairleigh Dickinson last Sunday by a final of 1-0. There only game this weekend will be against the Wildcats.
Vocelka shared, “This week in practice we have been focusing on continuing the momentum from this past weekend into this weekend playing Lehigh and La Salle. They are going to be two tough games but we think that if we continue to play the way we have we will be able to pull it out.”
The team, she says, has grown over the short season thus far, “We have only been together for about a month now but you can really see the growth that we have had. Especially against Lafayette winning 5-0, that was something that we knew was possible but it took a lot for us to get there.”
