PROVIDENCE, R.I. - Freshman forward Heidi Sabatura (Lawrenceville, N.J.) has been named the BIG EAST Rookie of the Week, it was announced by the league today. In her collegiate debut last week against Temple, Sabatura netted two goals and an assist in a 4-0 victory.
Villanova won its season opener for the ninth straight season and posted a shutout for the fifth year in a row. Sabatura assisted on the game's first goal in the 21st minute with a feed to sophomore Katie Ryan (Wayne, N.J.) and then helped to put the game out of reach with a pair of second-half goals. Her first collegiate goal came in the 67th minute when she beat the Owls goalkeeper on a rebound from point-blank range while appearing to simultaneously get inadvertently hit in the face.
"Heidi shows so much composure in the box and that is why she is able to finish her scoring chances," Villanova head coach John Byford said. "We saw in this game that she is a great passer as well."
Sabatura also tallied the game's final goal in the 88th minute, when she drilled home a shot from the middle of the box. She finished the day tied for the game-high with five shots, while scoring on two of her three shots on goal. The Wildcats outshot their visitors by a 24-4 margin.
Friday's game against Temple marked the second straight year that a Villanova freshman had a five-point game in her collegiate debut. Current sophomore Megan Verdeur (Levittown, Pa.) had two goals and one assist last season in a 7-0 win over UMBC in the 2008 opener.
The start of the Villanova season comes on the heels of a successful summer for Sabatura, who played for the FC Bucks Vipers U-18 team that won the USYSA national championship last month. Fellow Wildcat freshmen Alexa Carugati (Newtown, Pa.) and Carly Edgcomb (Princeton, N.J.) were also on that team.
The Wildcats host the Villanova Classic this weekend and will take on Virginia Tech on Friday at 4 p.m. as well as Nebraska at 1 p.m. Both games will be played at the West Campus Soccer Complex.
NOTES: The other BIG EAST weekly awards handed out on Monday included Offensive Player of the Week (Tara Strickland, DePaul), Defensive Player of the Week (Michaela Buonomo, Georgetown) and Goalkeeper of the Week (Kerri Butler, West Virginia) ... The league's weekly honor roll featured Rose Augustin (M, Notre Dame), Lindsay Boling (M, Louisville), Ashley Cuba (F, Pittsburgh), Jackie DesJardin (GK, Georgetown) and Emily Hebbeler (F, Cincinnati).
