VILLANOVA, Pa. - The Villanova women's soccer team kicks off the 2013 season this Friday, August 23rd when they take on the Radford Highlanders at West Campus Soccer Complex. Game time is slated for 4 p.m. and marks the NCAA Division I opening day for women's soccer across the country. The Wildcats will also travel to nationally-ranked No. 17 Maryland on Monday, August 26th to face the Terps in College Park, Md. at 7 p.m.
Villanova This Season: The Wildcats enter this weekend with a fresh slate and are looking to make a statement in their opening contests. Villanova returns 19 letterwinners and 10 starters from the 2012 squad that finished with an overall record of 7-9-3 and a conference mark of 5-4-1. Villanova advanced to the first round of the BIG EAST Championship just a year ago to mark their return to postseason play for the first time since the 2009 season.
Senior defender Taylor Houck (Chalfont, Pa.) and sophomore midfielder Emily Damstrom (Short Hills, N.J.) were tabbed as All-BIG EAST Preseason selections and the Wildcats were picked to finish third in the league in the Preseason Coaches' Poll. Marquette nabbed the top spot while Georgetown was picked to finish second in the league. The Hoyas also swept the Preseason Player of the Year honorees.
`Nova vs. Radford: Friday will mark just the second meeting between the Highlanders and the Wildcats with the lone contest ending in a 1-1 draw on September 27th, 1987, roughly four years before Villanova's current seniors were born.
A Look at Radford: The Highlanders compete in the Big South Conference and finished the 2012 season with a 14-3-4 overall record en route to their fourth Big South Regular Season Championship, their fifth Big South Tournament Championship and their sixth NCAA Tournament appearance in program history. The Highlanders concluded the season with a 2-0 loss to then-No. 13 North Carolina in the first round of the NCAA Tournament in Chapel Hill, N.C.
The Highlanders were tabbed to finish first in the Big South Conference this season while senior goalkeeper Che' Brown was named the preseason Defensive Player of the Year.
`Nova vs. Maryland: Monday will mark the 11th overall meeting between Villanova and Maryland with the Terps taking the upper hand in the all-time series at 4-5-1. The two squads last met just a year ago when they played to a 0-0 draw at West Campus Soccer Complex on August 19th, 2012.
A Look at Maryland: Maryland enters the 2013 season ranked No. 17 in the Soccer America preseason poll released on August 21st. The Terps were picked to finish seventh in the ACC Preseason Coaches Poll and return 21 letterwinners and seven starters from the 2012 squad that finished the year with an 11-7-2 overall record. The Terps advanced to the second round of the NCAA Tournament just a year ago and fell to Denver 3-2 in overtime in Stanford, Calif. to conclude the season.
