Villanova Picked 6th in BIG EAST Preseason Poll

NEW YORK, N.Y. - The Villanova women's soccer team has been picked to finish 6th in the 2014 BIG EAST Preseason Poll while sophomore forward Katie Martin (Dallas, Texas) was named to the All-BIG EAST Preseason Team as announced by the conference office on Wednesday afternoon. Voting was conducted amongst the league's head coaches while the coaches were not permitted to vote for their own team or players.

The Wildcats welcome back eight starters from a team that finished the 2013 season with a 6-10-3 overall record and advanced to the first round of the BIG EAST Championship for the second-straight year. Marquette, the 2013 BIG EAST Championship titlist, was chosen to the win the regular-season crown.

St. John's Rachel Daly and Georgia Kearney-Perry were named the Preseason Offensive and Defensive Players of the Year, respectively, while DePaul's Alejandria Godinez was chosen as the Preseason Goalkeeper of the Year. Marquette, which returns five starters and 18 letterwinners in 2014, compiled an 18-4-0 record last fall and advanced to the NCAA Tournament. Marquette received nine of the 10 first-place votes from the coaches in this year's poll and finished with 81 points in the voting.

Georgetown was tabbed for second place with 72 points while garnering the other first-place vote. St. John's was slotted for fourth place, followed by Butler, Villanova, Seton Hall, Creighton, Providence and Xaiver rounding out the ballot.

The Preseason All-BIG EAST Team includes four unanimous picks including Daly and Kearney-Perry of St. John's, Daphne Corboz of Georgetown and Marquette's Mary Luba.

The 2014 BIG EAST conference schedule features 10 teams that will play a nine-game league schedule. The BIG EAST Women's Soccer Championship will begin with the opening round on campuses on Nov. 4 where six teams will qualify to play in the championship. The top two seeds will receive byes to the semifinals. The semifinal round and championship game will be played Nov. 7 and 9 in Jamaica, N.Y. on the St. John's University campus.
