Women's Soccer Picked Seventh in Preseason Coaches' Poll

The Villanova women’s soccer team has been picked to finish 7th in the 2017 BIG EAST Preseason Poll as announced by the conference office Thursday afternoon.  Voting is conducted amongst the league’s head coaches and the coaches are not permitted to vote for their own team or players.

The Wildcats welcome back 23 letterwinners and have added 9 newcomers for the upcoming season under new head coach, Chris McLain.  Of the newcomers, two are transfers, Emma Firenze played for McLain at Ohio State while Rebecca Gartner came to Villanova from Baylor. 

Georgetown was chosen to win the regular season crown receiving 9 first place votes and 81 total points, with DePaul coming in second receiving the other first place vote and a total of 70 points.  The Hoyas swept the Preseason Player of the Year awards with Rachel Corboz being named Offensive Player of the Year, Elizabeth Wenger Defensive Player of the Year, and Arielle Schechtman Goalkeeper of the Year. 

The 2017 BIG EAST conference schedule will feature 10 teams that will play a nine-game league schedule.  The BIG EAST Women’s Soccer Championship will begin with the opening round on campuses on October, 29 where six teams will qualify to play in the championship.  The top two seeds will receive byes to the semifinals.  The semifinal and championship game will be played on November 2nd and 5th.
