Wildcats Picked Third in BIG EAST Preaseason Poll

NEW YORK, N.Y. - The Villanova women's soccer team has been picked to finish third in the 2013 BIG EAST Preseason Poll, as announced Wednesday afternoon by the conference. The Wildcats welcome back 10 starters from a team that finished the 2012 season with a 7-9-3 overall record. Marquette, the 2012 BIG EAST Championship titlist, was chosen to the win the regular-season crown by a vote of the league's head coaches.
Villanova senior back Taylor Houck (Chalfont, Pa.) was chosen as a unanimous selection to the All-BIG EAST Preseason team while sophomore Emily Damstrom (Short Hills, N.J.) was also chosen to the squad as a midfielder.
Georgetown swept the individual preseason honors with Daphne Corboz being named BIG EAST Preseason Offensive Player of the Year, Emily Menges being named Preseason Defensive Player of the Year and Emma Newins being named Preseason Goalkeeper of the Year. The Preseason All-BIG EAST Team also was announced. Coaches were not permitted to vote for their own players.
Marquette, which returns six starters for head coach Markus Roeders, compiled an 18-2-3 record last fall and advanced to the NCAA Sweet 16. Marquette received seven of the 10 first-place votes from the coaches in this year's poll and finished with 79 points in the voting.
Georgetown was tabbed for second place with 75 points while garnering the other three first-place votes. DePaul was slotted for fourth place, followed by Providence, St. John's, Butler, Seton Hall, Creighton and Xavier rounding out the poll.
The Preseason All-BIG EAST Team includes the Georgetown trio of standouts. Corboz and Menges were unanimous selections. The other unanimous picks were forward Maegan Kelly and defender Emily Jacobsen of Marquette along with Houck of Villanova.
In 2013, the BIG EAST will consist of 10 teams and play a nine-game league schedule in one division. The BIG EAST has added three new members, Butler University, Creighton University and Xavier University. The BIG EAST Women's Soccer Championship will begin with the opening round on campuses on Nov. 5. Six teams will qualify for the championship. The No. 3 seed will play the No. 6 seed and the No. 4 seed will play the No. 5 seed in the opening round. The top two seeds will receive byes to the semifinals. The semifinal round and championship game will be played Nov. 8 and 10 at Marquette's Valley Fields in Milwaukee, Wis.
