VILLANOVA, Pa. - Villanova head women's soccer coach Fran Kulas has announced that Kristin Shaw will be joining the Wildcats as their new assistant coach, effective on January 16th. Shaw joins the Wildcats after previously serving as the head women's soccer coach for the past three years at Smith College in Northampton, Mass.
"I'm ecstatic to welcome Kristin Shaw to the Villanova Women's Soccer family," said head coach Fran Kulas. "Kristin and I have worked together now for almost four years with the Region 1 Olympic Development Program (ODP) Regional team and I'm very excited to work with her on a daily basis here at Villanova. Kristin is a talented coach and a great fit for the Villanova community. As anxious as I am to start working with her, I am even more thrilled that our student-athletes will have the opportunity to benefit from Coach Shaw's passion for the game and her vast skill set in the coaching profession."
Shaw comes to Villanova after serving the past three years as head women's soccer coach at Smith College in Massachusetts, where she also served as a professor for Philosophy and Ethics of Sport. Prior to becoming head coach at Smith, Kristin was the associate head women's soccer coach at the State University of New York at Albany for one season and was promoted to that role from assistant coach after five seasons. In addition to her ODP Regional Team and collegiate coaching experience, Coach Shaw has served as General Manager and Head Coach of the New England Mutiny WPSL semi-professional team and her playing career included time in the WPSL with the New England Mutiny and the Colorado Springs Sabers, as well as at the University of Washington. Coach Shaw holds the NSCAA Advanced National and State Goalkeeping Coaching Diplomas, a bachelor's degree in English Literature and Composition and a master's of Business Administration in Finance.
"I would like to thank Head Coach Fran Kulas and Senior Women's Administrator Lynn Tighe for inviting me to be part of the Villanova community," said Shaw. "This is an exciting opportunity to work with Coach Kulas and the talented student-athletes in the women's soccer program. I am thankful to Smith College for allowing me to be a part of their rich tradition in women's sports these past three years, but I now look forward to working with a new group of student-athletes at Villanova and doing my part to help return this program to the top of the BIG EAST Conference."
