Fighting Irish Top Wildcats, 4-0

VILLANOVA, PA. --- Trying to improve upon their season-high three game unbeaten streak against No. 2 ranked Notre Dame on Sunday, Sept. 28, the Wildcats fell to the Fighting Irish 4-0, dropping their season record to 4-5-1 overall and 2-2 in the Big East.

After playing even through the first 31 minutes of the game, Notre Dame freshman, Meotis Erikson, from Kennewick, Wash./ Kamlakin H.S., put the Irish ahead for good redirecting a pass from teammate Monica Gerardo, Simi Valley, Calif./ Simi Valley H.S. Senior tri-captain Holly Manthel (4 assists), from Burnsville, Minn./ Burnsville H.S., initiated the play centering the ball to Gerardo who passed the ball to Erikson scoring from point-blank range. About 10 minutes later, Notre Dame struck again when freshman Monica Gonzalez, from Richardson, Texas/ East Plano H.S., netted her fourth goal of the season. Both junior Shannon Boxx, from Torrance, Calif./ South H.S., and Manthel each were credited with the assist. Just two minutes later, freshman sniper Anne Makinen, from Helsinki, Finland/ Makelanrinteen Iukio H.S., released a cannon past Wildcat goalkeeper Jeanne Hennessy (24 saves). Makinen received a pass from Manthel and sophomore Kara Brown, from Avon, Conn./ Westminster H.S.

In the second half, Erikson capped the Irish offensive attack with by heading teammate Holly Manthel's centering pass with 2:51 remaining in the contest.

The Wildcats next visit Big East opponent Connecticut on Oct. 4, 1997, at 3:30.
