Wildcats Tame Panthers, 6-0

VILLANOVA, Pa. -- The Villanova Wildcats improved their overall record to 4-4-1 and 2-1 in the Big East Conference, with a 6-0 triumph over the visiting Pittsburgh Panthers (1-4-2,0-3) at the Villanova Soccer Field.

The Wildcats jumped out to an early one goal lead when sophomore Kathy Minnich, from Wilton, CT/Wilton H.S., scored 9:17 into the game. Minnich beat the Panther goalie after receiving a pass from sophomore teammate Lauren Sellers. Sellers, a sophomore from Yardley, PA/The Peddie School, recorded her 12th point of the year (4 goals, 4 assist).

The Wildcats offense struck for the second time in the first half when Minnich deflected a centering pass from freshman Justina Smith, from Langhorne, PA/Villa Joseph Marie H.S. Minnich brought her season total to nine points (4 goals, 1 assist).

However, after entering the half with a 2-0 lead, the Wildcats offense was still hungry. Senior tri-captain Maura McGhee, from Lincroft, NJ/St. Rose H.S., scored the first two goals of the second half just six minutes apart. McGhee finished the game with two goals and one assist bringing her season total to 16 points (7 goals, 2 assists). Less than two minute after McGhee's second goal, senior Stephanie Shields, from Pittsburgh, PA/Upper St. Clair, netted her first goal of the season knocking in Molly Bushman's (2 assists) centering pass. Senior Nicole Posillico's successful penalty kick capped the Wildcat offensive explosion with a little over 10 minutes remaining in the game.

Three Villanova goalkeepers, seniors Shelagh O'Hagan and Diana Anes, and junior Jeanne Hennessy, combined for six saves in shutting out the Panthers' offense.

Up next for the Wildcats, the No. 2 ranked Notre Dame Fighting Irish, visit Villanova on Sunday, Sept. 28, at 1pm.
