Villanova Women's Soccer Ties Delaware 2-2

VILLANOVA, Pa. - The Villanova Wildcats (3-4-1) tied the Delaware Blue Hen's (4-3-1) 2-2 on Wednesday, September 24, at the Villanova Soccer Field on the campus of Villanova University.

The first half was an offensive showcase for the Wildcats. Sophomore forward Kathy Minninch continued her hot streak by scoring the first goal of the game for Villanova at the 24 minute mark. She was assisted by fellow sophomore standout Lauren Sellers. However, Delaware was quick to respond with a goal 40 seconds later by freshman Mandy Merritt to knot the score at 1-1. The Wildcats regained the lead following an unassisted goal from senior co-catain Maura McGhee. At the end of the half, Villanova lead by a score of 2-1.

The second have was marred by several penalties and game misconducts. The Blue Hen's tallied the only goal of the half in the fifty-fifth minute by senior Kate Townsley. Defensive stalemates and hard physical play dictated the rest of the game.

Overtime proved to be of no advantage to either team. The defensive mindset that engulfed the second half carried over to the additional period. Each team attempted several offensive charges but could not find the back of the net.

Villanova returns to Big East Conference play Friday, September 26, at 4 pm to host the Pittsburgh Panthers.
