Villanova Beats Georgetown 3-2
Villanova University sophomore forward Kathy Minnich scored on a header in the seventy-fifth minute of play for the go-ahead goal to lift the Wildcats to a 3-2 win over Georgetown University in women's BIG EAST soccer action on Saturday, September 20, at Harbin Field on the campus of Georgetown University. With the win, Villanova improves to 3-4 overall and 1-1 in Big East Conference play, while Georgetown falls to 2-3 and 0-3 in BIG EAST Conference play.
Minnich, a sophomore from Wilton, CT., also had the assist on the first goal of the game scored by sophomore forward Lauren Sellers in the third minute of the game. With the goal, Villanova took an early 1-0 lead, but GU forward Melissa Coleman scored two-consecutive goals in the fourth minute and the twenty-third minute gave the the Hoyas a 2-1 halftime lead. Coleman's first goals was assisted by mid-fielders Laura Venner and Jessica Czar.
Trailing 2-1 in the second half, Villanova came back to tie the contest with an unassisted goal by senior mid-fielder Maura McGhee at the 58:09 mark. The Wildcats then took the lead with Minnich's goal at the 74:20 mark, off an assist from freshman Justina Smith. Villanova was able to hold off Georgetown's offensive surge late in the second half to retain the lead fot the victory.
Villanova returns home on Wednesday, Sept. 24 to take on the Blue Hens of Delaware at 4 p.m.
