Villanova Defeats No. 20 Penn State

VILLANOVA, Pa.--- The Villanova women's soccer team (2-3-0) continued its winning ways with a 2-1 victory over No. 20 Penn State Lady Lions, on Sunday, Sept. 14, at the Wildcats soccer fields on the campus of Villanova University.

The first half proved to be a defensive struggle, as the Wildcats behind the efforts of senior Nikki Possillico shut down the Lady Lion offense. As the game reached intermission, Villanova and Penn State were knotted in a 0-0 scoreless tie.

The second half began much like the first, until Villanova broke the shutout with a goal by sophomore Lauren Sellers at the 10 minute mark, assisted by junior Amy Poplawski. Penn State was quick to retaliate with a goal of its own just four minutes later to tie the score at 1-1.

The game remained tied at one until just over five minutes remaining, when senior Maura McGhee gave the Cats the lead with her third goal of the season. The Villanova defense staged off several late offensive flurries by Penn State to give the Wildcats an upset victory over the Nittany Lions. The win was Villanova's second consecutive victory of the season.

The Wildcats open the Big East Conference season Wednesday, Sept. 17, against the Seton Hall Pirates at 4 pm.
