Rutgers Slips Past Villanova 2-0
VILLANOVA, Pa. -- Trying to end the season on a six game unbeaten streak heading into next weekend's Big East Tournament, Villanova lost to the Scarlet Knights of Rutgers 2-0 on Saturday, Nov. 1, at the Villanova Soccer Field, ending their unbeaten streak at five. With the loss, the Wildcats' record drops to 8-7-2 overall and 6-4-1 in the Big East.
In a rainy, sloppy day at Villanova, Rutgers got on the board first at the 33:57 mark of the first half, on a goal by Alyssa Radu. Despite eight saves by junior goalie Jeanne Hennessy (the Big East Defensive Player-of-the-Week) in the first half, the Wildcats went into intermission trailing 1-0.
The second half was a physical defensive battle, with neither team able to get much offense flowing on the slippery surface. With 35:22 left in the contest, however, the Scarlet Knights added to their lead as Jenica Junilla passed to Gina Ressa who scored the game's second goal and extended the Rutgers lead to 2-0.
Wildcat senior defender Beth McCaffery playing in her final home game, junior Jessica Baratta and freshman Justina Smith each had solid performances on defense for Villanova, but it wasn't enough as the Scarlet Knights beat the Wildcats 2-0. In the loss, Hennessy ended the game with 12 saves.
The Wildcats travel to Rutgers for the Big East Tournament next weekend, where they will play the No. 2 nationally ranked Notre Dame Fighting Irish on Friday, Nov. 7 at 6 p.m.
