Villanova Loses to #9 Connecticut, 3-0
In a Big East battle against conference rival and #9 nationally ranked Connecticut, on Saturday, Oct. 4, at Connecticut, the Wildcats fell to the Huskies 3-0. The loss dropped Villanova's record to 4-6-1 on the season and 2-3-0 in Big East Conference play.
The first half was a defensive struggle with the Wildcats holding the Huskies scoreless until the 26:26 mark, when Carmie Landeen scored the game's first goal, assisted by Jennifer Tietjen and Naomi Stone. Just under 12 minutes later Sara Whalen scored for the Huskies assisted yet again by Tietjen to extend the Connecticut lead to 2-0 at intermission
In the second half, the Villanova defense shut down the nationally ranked Huskie offense led by seniors Nikki Posillico and Beth McCaffery. Connecticut would not strike again until a foul at the 59:27 mark gave the Huskies a penalty kick, which Jen Carlson put in to extend the Huskie lead to 3-0. Connecticut goalie Jennifer Traw saved 10 shots to preserve the shutout for the Huskies (10-1-0, 6-0-0).
For Villanova, junior Jeanne Hennessy was outstanding in goal, saving 19 shots, to increase her season total to 137 for a .860 save percentage. Outstanding defensive performances were also had by senior Stephanie Shields, junior Jessica Baratta and freshman Justina Smith.
Villanova travels to St. John's on Wednesday, Oct. 8, to take on the Red Storm at 5 pm.
