Wildcats Blank Friars

PROVIDENCE, R.I. -- Trying to extend their Big East winning streak to four games, Villanova went into Providence on Friday, Oct. 24, and defeated the Friars 6-0, picking up two points in the conference standings. With the victory, Villanova improved their record to 7-6-2 overall on the season and 5-3-1 in the Big East Conference.

Offense was the name of this Villanova victory as the Wildcats got a hat trick in the first half from freshman Kathy Minnich. Minnich opened the scoring 13 minutes into the game, taking a pass from Justina Smith and finding the back of the net to make the score 1-0. Just 3 minutes later, Minnich scored once again, as she took a pass from senior Maura McGhee to give the Wildcats a 2-0 lead.

Just three minutes after Minnich's second goal, McGhee got herself on the board with a goal of her own on a direct kick. McGhee's goal was her team-leading eleventh of the season. Minnich then finished off her hat trick at the 22:31 minute mark taking a pass from Lauren Sellers and beating Friars goalkeeper Shayna Ross to give Villanova a 4-0 lead at halftime

The second half was once again dominated by Villanova as Lauren Sellers netted 2 goals. Sellers first goal came at the 53:07 minute mark assisted by Amy Poplawski. With just under 30 minutes remaining in the contest, Sellers scored an unassisted goal to give the Wildcats a 6-0 victory. Villanova goalie Jeanne Hennessy saved one shot, tallying her fifth shutout of the seaon.

The Wildcats are on the road again as they stay up north to take on Boston College on Sunday Oct. 26 at 12 pm.
