Women's Soccer Blanks Syracuse

VILLANOVA, Pa.-Villanova surpassed the .500 mark in the Big East (4-3) and evened up their overall record at 6-6-1, beating Syracuse 1-0 on Saturday, Oct. 11, in a game played at the Villanova Soccer Field on the campus of Villanova University.

With just over 26 minutes to go in the first half, Villanova opened the scoring on a goal by senior Maura McGhee, assisted by senior Stephanie Shields and sophomore Briar MacAdams. McGhee received the ball on the left side of the field, and buried a shot just inside the right crossbar past Orangemen goalie Riley Wogamon, for her tenth goal of the season and third in her last two games.

In the second half, the Wildcat defense stifled Syracuse who fell to 11-3 with the loss and 5-3 in the Big East Conference. On defense for the Wildcats, seniors Molly Bushman and Nikki Posillico shut down a usually potent Syracuse offense, taking 25-point scorer Erin O'Grady out of her normal offensive flow. In goal, junior Jeanne Hennessy stopped six shots on the day for her third shutout of the season.

The Wildcats go on the road next, for a three-game Big East road trip that takes them to West Virginia on Oct. 18, Providence on Oct. 24 and Boston College on Oct. 26. Villanova will try to continue the pace they started 10 games ago, to make a late season run at the four-team Big East Tournament. Over their last 10 games, the Wildcats are 6-3-1.
