JAMAICA, N.Y. - Despite a surge of late game pressure and a Hayley Wilson (Leonardtown, Md.) goal to even the game, the Villanova Wildcats couldn't find the game-winner as they posted a 1-1 double overtime draw against St. John's in Jamaica, N.Y. The tie marks the third of the season for Villanova as they look to make a push for the conference tournament towards the end of the season.
With the tie, Villanova moves to 5-6-3 overall and 2-2-1 in the conference while St. John's pushes to 7-3-2 overall and 1-2-2 in the BIG EAST. The Red Storm started the game strong and tallied the early advantage following the first stanza with a 7-2 advantage in shots and a 4-1 lead in corners for the first 45 minutes.
Following intermission, St. John's made the most of their opportunity in the 47th minute when Rachel Daly headed in a feed from Sarah Ashmore to put the Red Storm on the board at 1-0. However, the Wildcats came back with a vengeance and scored on the following play less than a minute later on a free kick when Wilson nailed home a score to tie the game at 1-1. With time winding down, neither team could find a breakthrough through the opposite defense and the contest went into overtime.
Both overtime periods featured chances by both teams, including a 2-1 advantage in shots for St. John's during the first 10 minute overtime and a 3-2 lead during the second extra-time period. Neither team registered a corner kick during the 20 minutes of extra time as the match ended in a 1-1 draw.
Defensively, senior goalkeeper Jami Kranich (Hamden, Conn.) tallied six saves while STJ's Diana Poulin tallied four. A physical game on both ends saw five yellow cards total given out during the 110 minutes of action.
Villanova will be back in action on Thursday, Oct. 17th when they host Creighton for a weekday matchup. Game time is slated for 4 p.m. at West Campus Soccer Complex.
