CHICAGO, Ill. - A scoreless first half set the scene for an exciting finish, but the Wildcats couldn't pull away for the win as the DePaul Blue Demons posted a 2-0 victory over Villanova on Sunday afternoon at Wish Field in Chicago, Ill.
The Blue Demons scored just six minutes apart and netted goals in the 51st and 57th minutes to claim the victory. DePaul scored their first goal off an Ashley Goddard attempt from the middle of the box just eight yards out to beat Villanova senior keeper Jami Kranich (Hamden, Conn.). Six minutes later, Rachel Pitman added an insurance goal with a shot from the right wing 12 yards out from an assist by Elise Wyatt.
Villanova dominated the first half of action and led DePaul in shots by a 6-2 margin, but the Blue Demons came back fighting following intermission as both teams counted a flurry of shots in the final 45 minutes. The Wildcats had several opportunities and kept knocking at the door in the second stanza but couldn't get past the stingy Blue Demon defense.
Defensively, Kranich finished the contest with two saves while DePaul's Alejandria Godinez made seven stops for the win.
DePaul improved to 8-2-2 overall and 2-1-1 in the BIG EAST with the win while Villanova drops to 5-6-2 overall with a 2-2 mark in conference play. The victory also marked the second-consecutive win for the Blue Demons over Villanova as the two squads last met in the first round of the BIG EAST Championship just a year ago.
Villanova will be back in action on Saturday, October 12th when they make the trek to Jamaica, N.Y. to face the St. John's Red Storm. Game time is slated for 7 p.m.
