SOUTH ORANGE, N.J. - In the second game of a BIG EAST New Jersey weekend, Villanova (3-5-2; 1-1) stumbled at Seton Hall (6-4-0; 1-1), falling 2-0 on Sunday afternoon. SHU's Stephanie Soma notched two first-half goals to put the Pirates on the winning end of the conference battle.
The Pirates dominated the first half of play, outshooting the Wildcats 17-2 in the first stanza as Soma headed in a Kaitlyn Ritter cross at the 33 minute mark to get the Pirates on the scoreboard. Soma's second goal of the contest would come just ten second before halftime after cleaning up a rebound from an initial Kelsey Quinn (Mt. Airy, Md.) save.
For the game, the Pirates maintained a 9-3 and 6-4 advantage in shots on goal and corners. VU's Quinn posted six saves for the contest while SHU's Gina Maiorana tallied three on the day.
The second half was a physical affair as Seton Hall anchored in on defense in an effort to protect their two-goal lead. Villanova created a number of looks on net, including shots from Caitlin Forte (Selbyville, Del.) and Reanna Marino (Massapequa, N.Y.), but the Wildcats couldn't find their footing despite totaling four corner kicks in the second 45.
Villanova will look to rebound when they return to action on Friday, September 21st and Sunday, September 23rd when they host Providence and Connecticut at West Campus Soccer Complex. Game times are slated for 4:00 p.m. and 1:00 p.m., respectively.
