Seton Hall Edges Lafayette 1-0 at Villanova Tournament
Sept. 2, 2007
On the final day of competition at the Villanova Tournament, a goal in the 79th minute lifted Seton Hall (2-0) to a 1-0 victory over Lafayette (0-2) at the West Campus Soccer Complex. The teams played in the first game of a doubleheader on Sunday, while host Villanova defeated Virginia Commonwealth 3-0 in the second game of the day.
The Pirates owned an 18-6 shot advantage for the game but Leopards goalkeeper Mary Kate Erdman came up with seven saves, including a stretching jump to her right in the first half to pull back a ball that appeared headed for the right corner of the net.
Seton Hall kept constant pressure on the Lafayette defense, however, and Nicki Gross registered the lone goal of the contest at the 78:18 mark. She took a pass from Kaitlyn Rogers on the right side and shot the ball to the bottom right corner of the net.
Senior goalkeeper Amanda Becker made three saves for the Pirates to register her second straight shutout. Becker had played the entire game in goal on Friday when Seton Hall beat Virginia Commonwealth 4-0 on the strength of three first-half goals.
Caroline Tuttle took three shots for Lafayette but the Leopards were unable to jumpstart their offense from the midfield. The team had no corner kicks in the game and faced a stingy Pirate defense when it did get the ball in dangerous positions.
Villanova hosted a regular season tournament on campus for only the fifth time in the team's 24-year varsity history. The Wildcats also hosted a Labor Day weekend tournament last season but prior to that had not hosted their own tournament since 1988.
