Wildcats Fall to Richmond in Action Packed First Half, 3-1
Aug. 31, 2012
RICHMOND, VA. W - Villanova (1-3-1) once again surged to an early lead when sophomore midfielder Caitlin Forte (Selbyville, Del.) netted her first career goal just 1:14 minutes into the contest, but it wouldn't be enough to overpower a trio of first half scores from Richmond (1-4) as the Wildcats fell 3-1 at Robins Stadium on Friday night.
The loss marks the third straight for the Wildcats as the Spiders collected their first win on the season during their home opener. Forte's early goal also marks the second time Villanova has scored within the first two minutes of play after senior Heidi Sabatura (Lawrenceville, N.J.) gave the `Cats a 1-0 lead vs. Drexel on August 24th.
Sabatura found herself as the playmaker to begin the game, setting up a feed to Forte who found the net from 15 feet out on the left side of the box to put VU up 1-0.
Richmond quickly recomposed themselves and countered in the 26th minute with a goal from Violet Miller to tie the game at 1-1. Just nine minutes later, Dana Bernetich flicked in a deflection off a corner kick to give the Spiders the 2-1 lead while Natalie LeClair posted the third Richmond goal with eight seconds remaining in the half with a shot to the upper left corner.
Despite the action packed first half, the Wildcats had some fighting opportunities in the second stanza, outshooting Richmond by an 8-4 margin and forcing RU keeper Andrea Young to make four saves in the final 45 minutes of play.
Victoria Gersh (Silver Spring, Md.), Taylor Houck (Chalfont, Pa.), Stephanie Myers (Frisco, Texas), Sabatura and Forte combined for 13 shots on net while senior goalkeeper Kelsey Quinn (Mt. Airy, Md.) posted four saves in the defeat.
The Wildcats will look to get back to their winning ways when they face Virginia Commonwealth at Sports Backers Stadium on Sunday, September 2nd. Game time is slated for 1 p.m. in Richmond, Va.
