Villanova/Georgia State Post-Game Notes
Aug. 26, 2011
Villanova played its first road game of the season tonight and came away with the 3-2 victory over Georgia State. Last season the Wildcats were just 1-8 on the road, although the stat is not completely telling as Villanova added two more wins away from home in neutral-site contests.
The one true road win last season for the Wildcats came in the season opener at Temple. With the win at Georgia State tonight this is the 11th consecutive season that Villanova has gone unbeaten in its first road game of the season. Beginning with the 2001 season the Wildcats are 8-0-3 in their first road games each year.
Villanova is now 17-23-4 (.432) all-time against the teams that currently make up the Colonial Athletic Association. More recently, though, the Wildcats are 6-1-1 (.813) against CAA teams since the 2004 season began.
Senior forward Katie Ryan (Wayne, N.J.) scored her 31st career goal in the 14th minute of tonight's game. That total gives her sole possession of fourth place in the Villanova record book and she is now just five goals behind Jean Hajjar (1985-88) for third place.
Katie Ryan scored the first goal of a game for the 13th time in her career tonight. Going back to the beginning of last season, eight of Ryan's 12 goals have been the first goal of a game.
There have now been two straight games for Villanova in which both the Wildcats and their opponent have taken and successfully converted a penalty kick. In a 2-1 win over Saint Joseph's this past Monday both teams had a penalty kick goal in the first half. Prior to that game there had not been a Wildcats contest in the last 10 years in which both teams scored on a penalty kick in the same game.
