POST-GAME QUOTES Villanova 2, Saint Joseph's 1
Head Coach John Byford...
On the season's first two games: The team is happy with our results from the first two games. On Friday we got a tie against a good team and today we got a win against a cross-town rival who is always going to be fired up to play us. We could have done some things better in the first two games but overall I am happy with the results so far.
On the defensive unit with Taylor Houck and Alexa Carugati playing in the middle: We absolutely missed Alexa last year when she missed the season with an injury. She and Taylor have played together in that spot on their club team for 10 years. It is great that they can play together for us because our defense is an area where we needed to get better from last season.
On the various options the team has for the outside back positions: We played Megan Verdeur outside against James Madison and that was a tactical move because they are always a very athletic team. Today we played three freshmen on the outside and they all did very well there. Victoria Gersh is someone that is very versatile and very solid wherever she is on the field.
On the team's progress this early in the season: We are getting there but it is a process. The more we can play and train together the better. We have nine freshmen on the team so as everyone gets used to playing with each other we will only get better.
Senior forward Katie Ryan...
On Villanova's penalty kick: I can't remember who played it up to me but the back line from Saint Joseph's had been hitting us all day and I remember thinking that I just had to get into the box so that I would be in position to either finish the play or get fouled. I got knocked down and the penalty kick was awarded.
On her goal in the second half: I don't know what came over me when Heidi made her run but something told me that I should follow the play and I wound up in position to score. Heidi finishes so many of her chances but I was happy to be in the right place to get the rebound.
On the team's goals this season: We are trying to come together both on and off the field, especially with a lot of new faces. Our goal is to have a good season no matter what happens. We obviously want to have a good showing in the regular season and have a chance to have a good showing in the BIG EAST and NCAA tournaments but to begin with we just have to go out and play well. It has been terrific so far with the players that are back from injuries and the newcomers. We can play 11-v-11 in practice now.
