Paul Royal begins his fifth season as an assistant coach for the Villanova University women’s soccer team in 2002. He has served as the goalkeeper coach for the Wildcats since his arrival on the Main Line in 1998. In 2002, Royal also began volunteering with the goalkeepers for the WUSA’s Philadelphia Charge. Among those were former Villanova women’s soccer goalkeeper Janel Schillig, who signed with the Charge prior to the 2002 season. Royal attended the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee, where he graduated in 1996 with a bachelor’s degree in criminal justice. While at Wisconsin-Milwaukee, Royal played four years of varsity soccer and was the starting goalkeeper for the Panthers in each of his four seasons. He currently stands as the winningest goalkeeper in school history. During each of his four years at Wisconsin-Milwaukee, Royal led the Panthers into the the nation’s top 25. Twice he was named to the All-Midwestern Collegiate Conference first team. Royal was the eighth overall draft pick in 1995 by the NPSL’s Milwaukee Wave. He played with the Wave for two seasons from 1995-96. Royal is currently a member of the NPSL’s Philadelphia Kixx, where he has been since 1996. During the 2000-2001 season, he was a member of the Kixx team that went to the NPSL National Championship. Royal has also spent time with the South Jersey Barons of the D3 Pro League. In 1998 while with the Barons, Royal received second team All-D3 Pro League honors. As the team captain for South Jersey in 1999, Royal helped lead the Barons to the D3 Regular Season National Championship. South Jersey finished the season as a National Finalist. In addition to his playing accolades, Royal has spent time as the assistant varsity coach at Moorestown Friends High School. He was also the goalkeeper trainer for the New Jersey Olympic Development Program, and has served as the assistant director for the Villanova Soccer Camp since 1998. With the WUSA’s Philadelphia Charge calling Villanova Stadium home in 2001, Royal has been actively involved with the Charge serving as a volunteer goalkeeper trainer. Royal currently resides in Collingswood, N.J., with his wife Shelby. |
