McGhee Named to All-Region Soccer Team
Maura McGhee |
VILLANOVA, Pa. -- Villanova senior midfielder Maura McGhee (Lincroft, NJ/ St. Rose H.S.) was named to the Mid-Atlantic All-Region third team, on Tuesday, Nov. 25, for her outstanding play during the 1997 season.
McGhee led the Wildcats with 11 goals in 1997, and added four assists for a team-high 26 points. After an 0-3 start by the Villanova soccer team, the Wildcats went 8-3-2 over their next 13 games, including a 6-3-1 mark in the Big East during that period. Not coincidentally, after going scoreless over the season's first three games, McGhee caught fire and scored 11 goals, while dishing out two assists to help turn the Wildcats' season around and lead them to their third consecutive Big East Tournament berth.
In leading Villanova back to a 3-1 victory over St. John's on Oct. 8, and scoring the game's only goal in a 1-0 win over Syracuse on Oct. 11, McGhee was named the Big East Offensive Player-of-the-Week on Monday, Oct. 13. She went on to receive 1997 All-Big East first team honors, announced at the annual conference banquet held at the Big East Tournament on Thursday, Nov. 6.
Finishing up her third season at Villanova after transferring from George Mason, McGhee has tallied 28 goals and 13 assists for 69 points in her Wildcat career.
