McGhee and McCaffery Receive Big East Honors
Villanova, Pa. - On Thursday, Nov. 6, Villanova senior Maura McGhee (Lincroft, NJ/ St. Rose) was named to the All-Big East first team, while fellow senior Beth McCaffery (Feasterville, PA/Archbishop Wood) received All-Big East second team honors, at the Big East's annual awards banquet held at Rutgers University, this season's conference tournament site.
Starting in all 18 games for Villanova in the midfield, McGhee was the main offensive force behind the Wildcats attack. McGhee led the team with 11 goals and 26 points in 1997, while finishing second on the team in assists with four. In Big East play, she was equally impressive recording seven goals and two assists for 16 points.
McCaffery was Villanova's best and most consistent defender in 1997, helping hold opponents to 1.69 goals a game for overall games, and 1.32 goals a game in Big East Conference play. Starting in 17 of the 18 games she played in, McCaffery also tallied one goal and one assist for three points.
After beginning the 1997 season 0-3, the Wildcats turned it around finishing out the regular season 8-4-2. Led by the outstanding play of McGhee and McCaffery, Villanova closed out Big East play with a 4-1-1 record over their last six games, making a successful late season run at the Big East Tournament. The Wildcats berth in the four-team Big East Tournament, marked their third consecutive appearance, and fourth in five years.
