Wildcats Host Annual Knecht Cup

CAMDEN, N.J.--A first place finish in the Varsity Pair and a second place showing in the Grand Final of the Varsity Four highlighted the weekend for the Wildcats, as Villanova hosted the annual Knecht Cup on the Cooper River. The two-day event drew over 50 schools from around the nation.
In the Varsity Pair, the Wildcats entry crossed in 9:29.50, beating out two boats from Massachusetts, as well as teams from Wichita State, Johns Hopkins and Stanford. Villanova finished just over eight seconds ahead of the Massachusetts "A" boat.
In the Varsity Four, Villanova was ranked second out of 22 boats after the Heats, and then was seeded second out of 12 boats in the semifinals. The standings didn't change in the Grand Final, as the Wildcats posted a time of 7:56.0, finishing ahead of all but the "A" boat from Kansas, which produced a time of 7:48.8. The Wildcats finished ahead of Boston College, Sacramento State, Penn State and the Kansas "B" goat to get the win.
In other events during the weekend, Villanova placed second in the Third Final of the Varsity Eight race. The Wildcats were seeded 13th after the Heats and 18th after the Semifinals, and beat out Fordham, Temple, West Virginia and Connecticut in the final race with a time of 7:00.8. Villanova trailed only Colgate (6:57.7) in the race.
The Freshman/Novice Eight boat reached the Petite Final, and finished third with a time of 7:24.9. The Wildcats were seeded eighth out of 15 entries after the semifinals, and placed ahead of St. Joseph's, Kansas and Loyola in the Petite Final. Villanova trailed only Delaware and Massachusetts in the race.
Villanova also finished sixth in the final of the Second Varsity Four with a time of 8:18.3. The Wildcats trailed New Hampshire, Kansas, Boston College, Penn State and Lehigh in that race. In the Lightweight Eight, the Wildcats placed sixth in the Grand Final with a time of 7:41.2. Villanova was seeded seventh of 10 after the Heats, and finished behind teams from Princeton, Wisconsin, Radcliffe, Stanford and Georgetown. The Wildcats also entered a boat in the Second Freshman/Novice Eight, and placed seventh in the finals with a time of 9:02.00. Villanova finished behind Army, St. Joseph's, Massachusetts, Fordham, Radcliffe and Sacred Heart.
