Freshman/Novice 8+ Place Third at Dad Vail Regatta

PHILADELPHIA, Pa. - Following a successful preliminary run Friday morning, the Villanova rowing squad returned to the Schuylkill River on Saturday to compete in four races at the 76th annual Aberdeen Dad Vail Regatta. Led by Alexandra Yanoff, the Freshman/Novice 8+ placed third in the finals Heavyweight 8 event with a 7:51.320 mark.
The Wildcats smoked rival St. Joseph's along with Fordham, Wheaton and Northwestern with a time of 7:12.420 to advance to the event finals. Before advancing to the semis, Yanoff and her teammates took their initial heat over Fairfield and Penn State with a 7:01.458 finish. Joining the freshman was Lucia DeNicola serving as the bow, followed by Grace Carbajal, Mollie McMahon, Colleen Lavelle, Emily Lenane, Luisa Nitzschke, Jackie Denning and coxswain Maggie Cavanaugh.
In the Women's Varsity Heavyweight 8, Alanna McCloy and her group finished 16 seconds shy of Purdue and Massachusetts for a slot in the semis. McCloy was accompanied by (bow) Lauren Woodhull, Claire Keating, Heather Kittredge, Caroline McCaughey, Katrina Bertrand, Jackie Bertrand, Jackie Prazenica, Kelly O'Conor and (coxswain) Laura Saracina.
Carie Ewen led the Varsity 4 boat to a 7:28.369 mark in the qualifier, behind only Northwestern for the top spot. In the Varsity 4 Heavyweight competition, Ewen was joined by (bow) Jen DeCata, Sophie Gueterich, Cecilia Franko and (coxswain) Gabriella DeLorenzo to finish fifth with an 8:09.330 time.
The Women's Novice/Freshman 4 boat that consisted of (bow) Maria McGeary, Melanie Preve, Jillian Labetti, (stroke) Remington Barre and (coxswain) Alexandra Gera earned the top qualifying slot in their initial heat 7 race. In the semifinals, the Wildcats posted a 7:51.871 mark to finish in fourth place and end their run.
For the first time in its history, the Villanova Men's Varsity 8+ boat downed Temple in the semis to advance to the event finals later on in the afternoon. The Wildcats will compete against Army, Delaware, George Mason, Rochester and Lehigh.
