WEST WINDSOR, N.J. - Villanova competed at the seventh annual BIG EAST Championship on Sunday morning on Mercer Lake in New Jersey, where the Wildcats advanced to the petite finals of all three of their events.

The top boat for Villanova was the second varsity eight entry, which was occupied solely by true freshmen on the team and raced against stiff veteran competition from the major programs in the BIG EAST Conference.

In the preliminary heats of the second varsity eight the Wildcats were matched up with Louisville, Syracuse and Rutgers and finished fourth with a time of 7:39.61 in the second of two heats. Villanova was then matched against West Virginia in the petite final and came out on top of the Mountaineers with a time of 7:20.95. West Virginia followed in 7:27.58.

The second varsity eight boat was led by coxswain Laura Saracina (Falls Church, Va.) and also included Tory Clay (Byfield, Mass.) in bow, Jaclyn Prazenica (Drexel Hill, Pa.) in the two seat, Jennifer DeCata (Ridgefield, Conn.) in the three seat, Laura Nygren (Longmont, Colo.) in the four seat, Laura Valenstein (Bethesda, Md.) in the five seat, Alanna McCloy (Erdenheim, Pa.) in the six seat, Manuela Elizondo (San Diego, Calif.) in the seven seat and Anna Luber (Villa Hills, Ky.) in the eight seat.

Villanova also placed fourth in its preliminary heats of both the bVarsity Eight and the Varsity Four competitions. The Varsity Eight was the first race of the day at 8 a.m. and Villanova crossed the finish line with a time of 7:24.66 to finish behind Louisville, Georgetown and Rutgers.

 

 

In the petite final for the Varsity Eight the Wildcats raced against Connecticut and finished with a time of 7:18.30, while the Huskies crossed the finish line in 7:02.81.

The first heat of the Varsity Four included Louisville, Georgetown, Connecticut and Villanova and the Wildcats finished their race with a time of 8:50.01. The petite final for the Varsity Four featured Villanova and Rutgers racing against each other and the Wildcats cruised to a margin of victory of more than eight seconds over the Scarlet Knights. Villanova registered a time of 8:23.17 in the petite final and Rutgers finished in 8:31.55.

Notre Dame won the team title by a narrow margin over Louisville, finishing with 114 points in the team standings compared to the Cardinals total of 109. Georgetown came in third (95) and was followed by Syracuse (73), Connecticut (65), Rutgers (59), West Virginia (54) and Villanova (35).
