CHERRY HILL, N.J. - In an event that was comprised of 69 different schools from across the country, Villanova had two boats advance to the Grand Final on the Cooper River in Cherry Hill, N.J. on Sunday. The weekend was highlighted by a second-place finish from the Novice Four boat, while the Varsity Four group posted a fifth-place spot in their respective final.

Villanova claimed the victory in the preliminary heat of the Varsity Four race with a time of 8:00.30 on Saturday to advance to the semi-final run. This was the first event on the day for the Wildcats as the squad edged second-place finisher Boston College (8:10.83), Virginia Tech (8:21.17), Duquesne (8:29.05) and Pittsburgh (8:47.28).

In order to move forward to the Grand Final, the `Cats needed to register a first-place or second-place finish in the semi-finals. VU's boat triumphed in the field of six in a time of 7:48.06 and defeated runner-up Old Dominion (7:52.47) by an approximate four-second margin. A second boat was entered by Villanova in the Second Varsity Four competition and notched third-place, but would not advance.

Kansas came out victorious in the Varsity Four Grand Final on Sunday with a time of 7:31.11. The Wildcats crossed the line at 7:56.44 to collect fifth-place over six-place finisher Old Dominion (8:05.39).

VU (7:56.44) bested the entire field in the Novice Four race, except for Fairfield, to earn second-place in the preliminary heat. Following behind were Bucknell (8:21.81), Duquesne B (8:37.72), Colgate (8:48.37) and Mary Washington (9:33.47). Villanova's "B" entry in this competition also finished in second in another heat. Both advanced to the semi-final round.

The Villanova "A" boat fared well in the semi-final round, recording second, while the "B" boat was eliminated with a fifth-place showing. To advance in this specific race, the `Cats had to post fourth-place or better.

In the Grand Final of the Novice Four, Villanova notched a quality finish (7:51.97) and was awarded the silver medal. Duquesne (7:47.80) received the top spot, but VU trailed close behind by a mere four seconds.

The Varsity Eight boat, in its preliminary heat, crossed the finish line at 7:30.66 to round out the competition with a fifth-place finish. Duke would go on to win the Grand Final with a time of 6:25.69.

Villanova advanced to the semi-finals in the Novice Eight group after snagging second-place with the time of 7:21.33. Local rival, Drexel, topped the field at 7:12.55. A fifth-place spot in semi-final action would not be enough in advancing to the Grand Final or Petite Final.

In three out of the four categories (Novice Four, Varsity Four, Novice Eight) on the weekend, Villanova advanced to the semi-final round from a successful time in the preliminary heat.

The Wildcats will return to action for the Kerr Cup in Philadelphia, Pa. on Saturday, April 21st.

Last year in the Kerr Cup, Drexel secured the most points (55) to finish first overall. VU gathered 45 to take second overall, while Army posted 32 for third-place.
