PHILADELPHIA, Pa. - The Wildcats battled against local Drexel on the Schuylkill River in the Drexel Regatta on Saturday. VU returned from operation in Winter Park, Fla., and posted quality times in the famed event. This past weekend marked the second contest thus far on the spring slate.
There were a total of three entries placed in the Varsity Four race among the two schools. Drexel enrolled two boats in the chase. The Drexel "A" vessel finished with a time of 7:58.90 to register the first-place spot. Second-place Villanova trailed close behind by an approximate five-second margin, earning a time of 8:03.60. Placing third was the Drexel "B" boat (8:09.20).
As for the Varsity Eight category, Drexel competed again with a second boat. Villanova fought hard to rally, but could not overcome the deficit and notched second in a time of 6:56.80. DU's first entry recorded the victory at a 6:51.40 mark, while the second varsity boat crossed the finish line with a third-place showing in a time of 7:12.80.
In the Freshmen Eight competition, the Dragons captured the win over Villanova with a time of 7:13.30 and completed the afternoon with three first-place finishes. With nearly 27-seconds off the winning pace, the `Cats finished as the runner-up (7:30.40).
The distance of the course measured 2000 meters for each of the three categories. There were no contesting winds for the rowers, while the conditions were sunny and the temperature read 70 degrees at race time.
Villanova will head back to the Schuylkill River next weekend when the team competes in the Murphy Cup on Saturday, March 24th.
