WINTER PARK, Fla. - The Villanova rowing team competed on Lake Maitland this past weekend in the Rollins Invitational in Winter Park, Fla., and notched three first-place finishes. With this competition last Saturday, the spring season is now underway. VU raced against Rollins University, Florida State University and Embry Riddle in the 1950 meter course with an 8-10 mph cross-tail wind.

There were three boats entered into the Varsity Eight category. Villanova posted a time of 7:03.10 to edge second-place FSU by 12 seconds (7:15.10). A third-place showing was awarded to Rollins University with a time of 7:32.10.

Villanova achieved another victory in the Varsity Four race, as the "A" boat crossed the line in a time of 7:44.00. The Wildcats had two entries in this event with the other ("B") finishing at 7:51.20, which earned third. Coming in second again was Florida State. The Seminoles (7:44.90) were less than one second off the winning pace. Rounding out the race in fourth position was Rollins University with the time of 8:13.60.

In the Novice Eight competition, the `Cats earned their third and final win on the day. The Wildcats defeated Rollins University in the dual between the two schools. Villanova recorded a time of 7:18.60 and upended the Tars (7:43.90) with an approximate 25-second margin.

The Wildcats were not able to grasp first-place honors in the Novice Four, but battled hard nonetheless. In similarity to the Varsity Four contest, there were four total boats registered with two Villanova vessels that competed. Rollins executed down the stretch to seal the top spot with the time of 7:51.20. Following behind were both the "A" and "B" boats for VU with times of 8:05.70 and 8:07.10, respectively. The Embry Riddle Eagles received the fourth-spot (8:44.50), as this was the only competition the school appeared in.

Villanova resumes operation next weekend for the Drexel Regatta in Philadelphia, Pa. on Saturday, March 17th.
