VILLANOVA, Pa. - The Villanova women's lacrosse team released its spring 2014 schedule Wednesday, as announced by head coach Julie Young.
The Wildcats will face a challenging spring slate in Young's third season at the helm, facing four teams that participated in the 2013 NCAA Championship and two new BIG EAST opponents.
Villanova opens the season with a two-game home stand against Michigan on Feb. 22 and Navy on Feb. 26. The Wildcats will be the Wolverines' first-ever opponent as Michigan begins its inaugural season. Navy finished last season ranked in the top 20 of the IWLCA Coaches and deBeer Media Polls and made it to the second round of the NCAA Championship.
The Wildcats travel to Bucknell for the first road game of the slate on March 1. The Bison finished 2013 with a 5-12 record.
Villanova plays crosstown rival Drexel at home on March 5. The Dragons ended 2013 in the CAA semifinals, finishing with an 11-7 overall record.
The Wildcats play a three-game road swing, beginning with a stop at Delaware on March 8. The Blue Hens earned a 10-6 record in 2013.
On March 14 and 16, Villanova heads south to High Point and Davidson, respectively. The Panthers won the Big South Championship last season and earned an automatic berth to the NCAA Championship, where the team lost in the first round. Davidson dropped to High Point in the conference championship and finished 11-7 on the season.
The Wildcats host former BIG EAST rival Notre Dame on March 23. The Fighting Irish remain a powerhouse as they finished 2013 ranked in the top 20 in both IWLCA Coaches and deBeer Media Polls with a 12-5 record. Notre Dame lost a heartbreaking game, 8-7, in the first round of the NCAA Championship.
Rutgers travels to Villanova to begin the BIG EAST slate on March 29. The Scarlet Knights started 2013 off strong with a 7-1 record before fumbling and finishing the season 9-8.
The Wildcats travel for two instate games on April 2 and 5. Villanova heads to Easton, Pa., first to take on Lafayette. The Wildcats then take on Temple in Philadelphia for the first time as conference rivals.
The `Cats finish their home schedule against BIG EAST foes Cincinnati and Louisville on April 11 and 13. The Bearcats defeated the Wildcats last season, 17-7, and finished with a 7-9 record. The Cardinals finished 2013 with an 11-6 overall record, but were just 3-5 in conference play.
Villanova concludes the season on a three-game road stand against BIG EAST opponents. The team travels to Georgetown April 17 with a quick turnover to new conference member Marquette on the 19th. The regular season ends on April 26 at Connecticut.
The 2014 BIG EAST Championship will be hosted May 1 and 3 at Georgetown in Washington, D.C. The 2014 NCAA Championship will take place May 23 and 25 at Towson.
Villanova returns 21 letterwinners from last season, including seven starters, and the team welcomes 12 newcomers. The Wildcats finished the 2013 season with a 6-10 overall record and a 1-7 BIG EAST record.
