VILLANOVA, Pa. - The Villanova women's lacrosse team (5-6, 0-3) looks to collect their first BIG EAST contest when they travel to Rutgers (8-4, 0-3) this coming Saturday, April 13th for a 1 p.m. matchup.

Villanova This Season: The Wildcats enter Saturday's matchup with a 5-6 record after falling to Syracuse and Connecticut last weekend in Villanova Stadium. For the season, Villanova has tallied wins over Central Connecticut (W, 11-8), Mt. St. Mary's (W, 16-7), Columbia (W, 16-7), Davidson (W, 11-7) and Marquette (W, 19-8). Losses on the year have come from Lehigh (L, 10-9), Princeton (L, 10-5), Drexel (L, 14-10), Notre Dame (L, 14-2) and Syracuse (L, 19-7).

Rutgers Early Lead is Too Much for Wildcats to Overcome in 13-5 Loss
Rutgers scored the game's first three goals and held the lead the rest of the day on its way to a 13-5 BIG EAST win over the Wildcats on a sunny spring day at Villanova Stadium.

As of the latest IWLCA Coaches and deBeer/Inside Lacrosse Media Polls released on Monday, April 8th, Villanova has scheduled five ranked opponents on their calendar this season: No. 5 Notre Dame, No. 6 Syracuse, No. 8 Georgetown, No. 13 Princeton, No. 18 Connecticut and No. 20 Loyola.

`Nova Offense: Sophomore Jessica Mucci (Severna Park, Md.) leads the Villanova attack with 41 points via 11 goals and 30 assists while classmate Jackie Froccaro (Sands Point, N.Y.) follows closely behind with 26 goals and six assists for 32 points. Senior Shawna Giust (Basking Ridge, N.J.) leads the team with 33 draw controls on the year.

`Nova Defense: Defensively, Sarah Moody (Burke, Va.), Lauren Shockley (Newtown, Pa.), Amy Begay (Forest Hill, Md.) and Giust have been the starting four in the Villanova backfield and have combined for38 ground balls and 22 caused turnovers. Senior Amanda Hirschfeld (Timonium, Md.) and been the primary netminder and posts a 9.81 GAA and a .485 save percentage. Senior Dani Wiedmeier (Westlake, Ohio) and junior Julia Todd (Boston, Mass.) have also seen action behind the pipes. The duo has combined for 15 saves.

 

 

A Look at Rutgers: Mount St. Mary's brings a 1-4 record into Saturday's showdown with the Wildcats. The Mountaineers began the season with four straight losses to La Salle (L, 12-6), Johns Hopkins (L, 18-5), Columbia (L, 15-4) and Virginia Tech (L, 13-4) but rebounded earlier this week with an 18-0 win against Delaware State.

Scarlet Knight Offense: Rutgers averages 8.83 goals per game on offense and surrenders 6.67 goals per game defensively. Katrina Martinelli (27g, 8a) leads the team with 35 points while Megan Clements (18g, 4a) follows closely behind with 22 points through 12 games.

Scarlet Knight Defense: Lily Kalata has been the mainstay in net for the Scarlet Knights, playing 690 minutes while making 68 saves and posting a 6.78 GAA. Kalata's save percentage currently stands at 47%. On defense, Erin Turkot, Chelsea Intrabartola, Claire MacDougall and Hollie DiMuro have combined for 63 ground balls and 47 caused turnovers through 12 games.

The Last Meeting (4/5/12): Rutgers scored the game's first three goals and never trailed en route to a 13-5 victory over Villanova in a BIG EAST women's lacrosse contest played on Thursday afternoon at Villanova Stadium. The Wildcats are now 2-8 overall, 0-2 in the BIG EAST while Rutgers improves to 7-4 overall, 2-1 BIG EAST.
