Wildcats Resume BIG EAST Play Against Rutgers and Notre Dame

VILLANOVA, Pa. - The Villanova women's lacrosse squad (2-7, 0-1) resumes BIG EAST play this week hosting Rutgers and traveling to No. 6 Notre Dame.
The Wildcats host Rutgers (6-4, 1-1) on Thursday at 4:00 p.m. Villanova is coming off a 10-6 loss last week against California. The Wildcats were locked in a 5-5 tie before Cal scored 11 seconds into the second half and never trailed again. Senior Justine Donodeo leads the `Cats with 23 goals this season. Donodeo, and juniors Maria Bowman and Annie Fallon have each given out five assists. Junior Shawna Giust anchors the defense with 24 draw controls and 17 ground balls. In goal, junior Dani Widmeier has 47 saves, while classmate Amanda Hirschfeld has 26.
The Scarlet Knights have won five of their past six contests, including a 14-5 victory over Connecticut last Saturday. Junior Stephanie Anderson was named to the BIG EAST Weekly Honor Roll after scoring a career-high five goals in the game and posted eight for the week. Rutgers owns a 19-0 all-time record against Villanova and won in a 13-10 victory last season.
The Irish (8-1, 2-1) lost their first contest to Loyola in a 17-11 outing last week in Baltimore. Sophomore Margaret Smith earned a spot on the BIG EAST honor roll this week after posting three goals, five ground balls, 10 draw controls and four caused turnovers, including the game-winning goal in overtime against league foe Rutgers. Notre Dame will host No. 3 Syracuse on Thursday night before facing the Wildcats. Last season, the Irish defeated Villanova 14-5 at Villanova Stadium.
