Villanova Takes on Davidson Saturday for First Time in 14 Years

VILLANOVA, Pa. - The Villanova women's lacrosse team (3-3) returns home to Villanova Stadium this Saturday when they take on the Davidson Wildcats (2-3). Game time is slated for Noon on the Villanova University campus and will mark the first meeting between the two teams in nearly 14 years dating back to March 20th, 1999.

Villanova This Season: The Wildcats enter Saturday's matchup with a 3-3 record after defeating Columbia 16-7 earlier this week. Villanova has also posted wins over Mt. St. Mary's (W, 16-7) and Central Connecticut State (W, 11-8) this season and have fallen to Lehigh (L, 10-9), Princeton, (L, 10-5) and then-No. 18 Drexel (L, 14-10).
As of the latest IWLCA Coaches and deBeer/Inside Lacrosse Media Polls released on Tuesday, March 12th, Villanova has scheduled four ranked opponents on their calendar this season: No. 5 Syracuse, No. 8 Notre Dame, No. 10 Georgetown and No. 11 Loyola.
`Nova Offense: Sophomore Jessica Mucci (Severna Park, Md.) leads the Villanova attack with 23 points via four goals and 19 assists while senior Maria Bowman (Ft. Belvoir, Va.) follows closely behind with 11 goals and four assists for 15 points. Senior Shawna Giust (Basking Ridge, N.J.) leads the team with 16 draw controls on the year. As a team, Villanova has combined for 67 draws through six games.
`Nova Defense: Defensively, Sarah Moody (Burke, Va.), Lauren Shockley (Newtown, Pa.), Amy Begay (Forest Hill, Md.) and Giust have been the starting four in the Villanova backfield and have combined for 21 ground balls and 10 caused turnovers. Senior Amanda Hirschfeld (Timonium, Md.) and has earned the starting role in goal for the past four contests and posts a 8.68 GAA and a .488 save percentage. Senior Dani Wiedmeier (Westlake, Ohio) and junior Julia Todd (Boston, Mass.) have also seen action behind the pipes. The duo has combined for five saves and a 12.59 GAA.
A Look at Davidson: Davidson brings a 2-3 record into Saturday's showdown with the Wildcats. The Wildcats began the season with a loss to Virginia Tech (L, 12-8) but rebounded with a victory over Kennesaw State (W, 20-3) and Robert Morris (W, 13-6). Losses have also come at the hands of Vermont (L, 12-10) and Oregon (L, 7-6).
Wildcat Offense: Davidson averages 11.40 goals per game on offense and surrenders 7.80 goals per game defensively. Emily Cooke (9g, 16a) leads the team with 25 points while Ann Fucigna (14g) and Emma Sissman (8g, 3a) follow closely behind with 14 and 11 points apiece, respectively. 13 different players have posted points on the season through Davidson's five games.
Wildcat Defense: Jessica Melby has been the mainstay in net for the Wildcats, playing just over 260 minutes while making 32 saves and posting an 8.07 GAA. Melby's save percentage currently stands at .471. On defense, Paige Logan, Abigail Doelger, Holly Thomas and Erin McGuire have combined for 23 ground balls and 13 caused turnovers through five games.
