VILLANOVA, Pa. - The Villanova women's lacrosse team (1-3) looks to get back to their winning ways when they host Mount St. Mary's (1-4) this Saturday at 1 p.m. in Villanova Stadium. The Wildcats are looking to rebound from their midweek loss to Drexel from Wednesday afternoon.

Villanova This Season: The Wildcats enter Saturday's matchup with a 1-3 record after falling on Wednesday, 14-10, to No. 18 Drexel in Philadelphia, Pa. Villanova posted their lone win of the season nearly a week ago against Central Connecticut, 11-8, at Villanova Stadium but fell in their previous two outings to Lehigh (L, 10-9) and Princeton (L, 10-5) to begin the season.

As of the latest IWLCA Coaches and deBeer/Inside Lacrosse Media Polls released on Monday, March 4th, Villanova has scheduled five ranked opponents on their calendar this season: No. 6 Notre Dame, No. 7 Syracuse, No. 8 Georgetown, No. 12 Loyola and No. 18 Drexel.

`Nova Offense: Sophomore Jessica Mucci (Severna Park, Md.) leads the Villanova attack with 11 points via three goals and eight assists while senior Maria Bowman (Ft. Belvoir, Va.) follows closely behind with four goals and three assists for seven points. Senior Shawna Giust (Basking Ridge, N.J.) leads the team with eight draw controls on the year. As a team, Villanova has combined for 36 draws through four games.

`Nova Defense: Defensively, Sarah Moody (Burke, Va.), Lauren Shockley (Newtown, Pa.), Amy Begay (Forest Hill, Md.) and Giust have been the starting four in the Villanova backfield and have combined for 15 ground balls and five caused turnovers. Senior Amanda Hirschfeld (Timonium, Md.) and has earned the starting role in goal for the past three contests and posts a 10.25 GAA and a .407 save percentage. Senior Dani Wiedmeier (Westlake, Ohio) and junior Julia Todd (Boston, Mass.) have also seen action behind the pipes. The duo has combined for four saves and a 14.00 GAA.

 

 

A Look at MSM: Mount St. Mary's brings a 1-4 record into Saturday's showdown with the Wildcats. The Mountaineers began the season with four straight losses to La Salle (L, 12-6), Johns Hopkins (L, 18-5), Columbia (L, 15-4) and Virginia Tech (L, 13-4) but rebounded earlier this week with an 18-0 win against Delaware State.

Mountaineer Offense: Mount St. Mary's averages 7.40 goals per game on offense and surrenders 12.89 goals per game defensively. Lindsay Diaz (9, 2a) leads the team with 11 points while Kaitlyn Larrimore (5g, 2a), Megan Gluck (4g, 2a) and Hannah Gutcher (2g, 4a) have totaled seven and six points apiece, respectively, through five games.

Mountaineer Defense: Graduate student Sarah Jane Leder has been the mainstay in net for the Mountaineers, playing 180 minutes while making 44 saves and posting a 14.00 GAA. Leder's save percentage currently stands at 51%. On defense, Gabe Little, Annie Battista and Melissa Cox have combined for 30 ground balls and seven caused turnovers through five games.

The Last Meeting (4/6/08): Mount St. Mary's used a 10-goal second half to break open a deadlocked contest and went on to post a 15-9 victory over Villanova in a contest staged on a damp, cold afternoon at Villanova Stadium. The Wildcats jumped out to a fast start, scoring three of the game's first four goals in the contest's first 15 minutes.
