SYRACUSE, N.Y. - The 2012 season came to a close for the Villanova women's lacrosse team (4-12, 2-6) on Sunday afternoon as the Wildcats fell, 18-3, at No. 2 Syracuse.
The Orange (15-2, 8-0) finished the BIG EAST season undefeated and earned the No. 1 seed in the upcoming conference tournament.
The Orange dominated with 40 shots in the game, while `Nova was held to just 15. Syracuse also owned a heavy edge on draw controls with 20 and kept Villanova to just three.
Syracuse opened the game with a 7-0 lead until Goforth found the back of the net on a free position shot at 6:57 in the first half, which put the Wildcats one the board, 7-1. The Orange scored once more before the break and held an 8-1 advantage at halftime.
Trailing 12-1, Guidera was fouled and connected on a free position shot for Villanova's second goal at the 23:05 mark in the second half.
Lane scored her goal with 10:48 remaining in the game on an unassisted goal, but the Orange finished the game on a 6-1 run and won 18-3.
Senior Princess Livingston picked up three ground balls, while junior Amanda Hirschfeld took two. Livingston also tallied two caused turnovers. In goal, classmate Dani Wiedmeier played 42 minutes and earned seven saves, while Hirschfeld played 17 minutes with five saves.
The Wildcats finish with a 2-5 BIG EAST record for the first time in program history after defeating Cincinnati and Louisville this season. It was also the program's first defeat of the Cardinals.
