Quakers Down Wildcat Lacrosse 16-5
April 22, 2002
VILLANOVA, Pa. - The Pennsylvania Quakers jumped out to an early 4-1 advantage over the first ten minutes and never looked back en route to a 16-5 victory over the Villanova Wildcats in a game played Monday evening at Villanova Stadium. Four different Quaker players each scored two goals to pace Pennsylvania (7-7 overall, 3-4 Ivy League). With the loss, Villanova falls to 8-7 on the season. Penn's Traci Marabella opened the scoring at the 27:53 mark of the first half but the Wildcats responded with a goal five seconds later when senior Cecily Pierce (New Canaan, Conn./New Canaan) found the net to beat Quaker goalkeeper Allison Harper and even the score and 1-1. From that point on, Pennsylvania would score the next eight goals of the game and would hold the Wildcats scoreless over the next 27:00 minutes to take a commanding 9-1 lead heading into the break. Bess Hanley (Lutherville, Md./Notre Dame Prep), Meghan Carolan (Hicksville, N.Y./Hicksville) and Elizabeth Firth (Chevy Chase, Md./Georgetown Visitation) scored second half goals for Villanova but it was not enough to rally. The Wildcats could not overcome a Quaker attack that produced seven second-half goals en route to the 16-5 victory. In the net for the Wildcats, sophomore Brandy Greneir (Rochester, N.Y./Brighton) made five saves while Harper stopped seven shots for Pennsylvania.
The Wildcats will return on Thursday, April 25 for the last regular season game of the year when they host Philadelphia area rival Drexel in a non-conference match-up. Game time is set to begin at 3:30 p.m. at Villanova Stadium.
